About the House

I designed my whole house, but I built it in stages because I could not afford to do it all at once. The part with the deck came first. In the basement is a sauna, shower, toilet, laundry area, and garage. The first floor has the kitchen, and a screen porch. The third floor is a bedroom and a sleeping screen porch. Although I was able to sleep soundly in the screen porch at my parents house in Denver, in Iowa the birds are very loud in the morning. Since we didn't sleep there I have since turned it into my office. We lived in the first section of the house for about 3 years. Then I started the addition. In the lower level it includes a root/wine cellar, and a large basement. The first floor is a solar space, living and dinning area and a half bath. The third floor has another solar space, three bedrooms and a full bathroom.

On the south side of the house the
space is about 6 feet deep and then there
is a thick masonry wall, a "trombe wall".
It heats up during the day and the
thermal mass delays the passage of heat so
that it reaches the living area in the nighttime.
